Inform Magazine features the Impactful Adaptive Reuse of Assembly Norfolk
INFORM MAG FEATURES Assembly’s IMPACTFUL adaptive reuse DESIGN
Inform Magazine by AIA Virginia celebrates the diverse individuals and organizations that contribute to Virginia’s rich culture of architecture and design. Last month, they published a feature on Assembly Norfolk’s adaptive reuse design and it’s impact on connecting disparate areas of downtown Norfolk.
Our team led Assembly’s interior design, alongside WPA who led the architecture of the building, our work together helping to transform the former department store into a bustling, lively and energetic hub for creative businesses and individuals.
“Richmond design firm Campfire & Co. found richness through texture and color to create interiors that strike the challenging balance between defined zones in plan and unified interiors in section.”
With 15,000 square feet of common space across five floors including indoor and outdoor areas, Assembly has established itself as an integral space for the local community and beyond. Our team used a combination of patterns, texture, and a variety of furniture types to connect the spaces together while also defining individual work and play areas.
Essential to the design success of the building was also flexible furniture and layouts to accommodate a variety of different types of events and activities. For instance, the rooftop deck is typically set up for individuals or small groups to eat lunch or have a drink at the end of the day, but is also ready to be used for special events and big groups.
Within the larger context of the Assembly building, we’ve also had the opportunity to design the interior for the anchor tenant and building owner, Grow. This allowed us to showcase how a world class design team made a space uniquely connected to their brand while maintaining a connection to the overall design and aesthetic of the larger building community.
Assembly holds a special place in our design portfolio for its thoughtful approach to the work environment, but also for its impact and focus on building and connecting the community on a small and large scale.
