Six Tips for Infusing Brand Personality into Your Interior Space

The Board and staff of Orchard House Middle School collaborate on their brand personality to guide their design project.

The leadership at HBA Architecture + Interior Design choose personality traits and tone of voice descriptors to guide their brand personality.

01 – Define Your Brand Personality

To infuse your space with your brand, you need to first understand your identity beyond your color palette and logo mark. Our team does this by helping clients create a personality for their brand. If your company or organization were to spring to life and join us for coffee or happy hour, what would their defining characteristics and tone of voice be? Go deep and build a persona for your brand.

Your reception or entry is an opportunity for a first impression. How impactful do you want it to be? Gather Midlothian uses neon signage, a custom painted mural inspired by local mining history, wall graphics and dimensional art to connect to their story and surroundings.

Restrooms are an unexpected way to infuse personality in your space. The Emerald Lounge uses wood tones, vibrant paint, and lush tropical wallpaper to create a memorable moment.

02 – Identify Brand Moments to Celebrate

Consider key areas of your space that deserve special attention. If you had a guest visit, where are the spots you would stop on your tour to tell them about your work? If your space is more customer focused, what areas do guests tend to congregate or take photos of? Consider how you can customize these areas more with details that evoke your brand and echo your story.

Grounded in the youthful and optimistic brand personality, the paint, wall graphics, dimensional signage, and custom canvas panels at Fostering Acadia help tell a story of impact and hope.

Subtle graphic patterned wallpaper, textural artwork, and intentional accessories at Grow’s office connect to the humanistic values of the team’s digital experience work.

03 – Put Your Walls to Work

A horizontal canvas, your walls are an obvious but big opportunity to infuse brand personality. At all levels of finish and investment, your walls can take an average experience to a truly immersive one. Ideas to consider:

  • thoughtful paint colors that complement your brand (not all brand colors are meant to be paint colors!)

  • unique tile patterns

  • customized or unexpected wallpaper placement

  • curated artwork that connects to your story or personality

  • hand painted murals or custom wall graphics

  • artful installations like acoustic art or dimensional wall objects

Custom table legs and dry erase panels in this meeting space at the new YMCA Headquarters office mimic lines the iconic Y logo.

The acoustic wall panels in one of Grow’s meeting rooms was custom selected to match the warmth of their brand personality.

04 – Add Distinctive & Original Details

When choosing furniture, fabric, wallpaper, artwork and accessories, consider how small details could be customized to make your experience unique to your brand. A custom color on a piece of furniture or a specific shape of light fixture can connect to your offerings or brand. Technology has made custom printing more accessible than ever too, so creating a branded fabric and wallpaper could be the same price as choosing something off the shelf. These small moments go a long way to making the experience feel cohesive and distinctive for your audience

Volumetric door ID signage at Tilt Creative includes their brand icons and mimics historic wood columns found throughout the building.

Directional signage at Gather Virginia Beach shares materials and colors consistent with the brand and accents in the rest of the space.

Floor numbers and building wing signage at each elevator landing at Gather Midlothian is bright, dimensional, and a work of art.

05 – Customize Your Signage

Beyond a logo sign, your space likely includes wayfinding, door IDs, or storefront signage that could be designed to connect to your brand personality and aesthetic. If you have to have a restroom sign or directional signage moment, take the extra step to ensure it uses materials, language, and graphics that echo your brand’s guidelines and compliment the design of your space.

Sculptural flower pendants provide an artful visual and warm lighting that makes the booths at Emerald Lounge an extra intimate and lush experience.

Step into the restrooms at The Jasper to be delighted by a soundtrack of stand up comedy. The craft cocktail experts have planned for every detail of your visit.

06 – Don’t Forget SoundS, SMELLS, & Lighting

There’s nothing worse than eating an incredible and intimate meal to a soundtrack of club hits or top 40. Well, maybe that’s your thing. Either way, the music, lighting levels, and even smells can either keep your guests fully immersed in your brand’s experience or it can immediately draw them out. Retail shops with a signature scent, a thoughtful soundtrack that helps you enjoy your meal, or lighting temp and levels that keep a space feeling warm and intimate are essential details not to be overlooked.
