Tilt Creative + Production

Tilt is a creative studio that tells stories through live-action video, animation, and audio production. A minority and women owned firm, Tilt is headquartered in a historic building in Richmond’s Shockoe neighborhood, an area that’s most well known as the center of Richmond’s slave trade in the mid 1800s. The team at Tilt wanted to celebrate their presence in this historic neighborhood by creating an experience that revealed the soul of their building, didn’t shy away from history, and embraced the impactful work of a minority-led creative team.

The project transforms a timber and brick structure from the 1870s, previously a maze of ramps and corridors, into a cohesive and inviting space for Tilt’s creative team. By removing walls that hid the original structure, opening historic windows, and exposing brick walls, the design honors the building’s history while modernizing its functionality.

The interior design embraced dynamic patterns and colors, a collection of curated artwork from local and minority creators, custom furniture and acoustic details, and textural elements that complement the visible timber structure and make it immediately apparent to visitors this place is home to a curious and creative team.

The reimagined space better connects existing skylights to key areas and core circulation paths, provides a wide array of private, semi-private, and collaborative spaces for work and connection, and creates an awe-inspiring place for clients and team members to tell their stories.  Modern amenities like a fully functional kitchen and team spaces echo Tilt’s community-focused office culture.

Careful placement of open workstations, lounge areas, editing rooms, and phone booths create an office that manages noise and supports all types of work. Natural light, plant life, and bold color provide a welcoming visual break from focused screen time. The design is inviting, detailed, and visually compelling, evoking Tilt’s authentic yet comfortable brand personality.
